My Father the 'Good Samaritan' A beer lover and major home brewer |
Beer has been one of my more absorbing hobbies from many years. Not just its consumption but the whole world of beer, its history, the brewing process, the different styles and how the culture of beer varies from country to country. Most holidays manage to include some aspect of beer or brewing and as a regular visitor to Belgium I have been able to enjoy the potent variety of one of the most diverse beer cultures in the world. Until the advent of safe drinking water and accessible food, beer, was an integral part of everyone's daily life. In the 17th century the average consumption was 7 pints a day and even young children had their share of the brew. Today it fills a more social role as either an adjunct to or the focus of our leisure time. Beer has also become a very commercial product, where profit and mass marketing has created nondescript beers of little character and even less taste. Fortunately there are many enthusiasts like the owner and brewer at Rockingham Ales that treasure our brewing heritage and continue to produce beers to delight the palette and warm the heart. The pages below are drawn from the information and knowledge I have gathered over the years. It's not so much as a work of reference than a collection of information that I have occasion to use. |

These are among my favourite Beer Tourist destinations. They have a good mix of bars an interesting range of beers and plenty of non-alcoholic attractions. I have listed the bars we tend to visit most often, many also provide good food. |
